Position Title: Volunteer Workshop Facilitator

Work Level: Volunteer

Reports to: Community Health Promotion Officer (CHPO)

Time commitment: Minimum of 16 hours per 12 months (1 workshop per year)

Position Overview

Volunteer Workshop Facilitators support the delivery of peer‑led workshops and forums for LGBTQ+ communities. They play a key role in creating safe, inclusive and engaging spaces where community members can connect with one another and explore topics related to identity, wellbeing, HIV and sexual health through facilitated peer discussion.

Volunteer Workshop Facilitators work alongside other facilitators and ACON staff to deliver community‑centred, culturally responsive programs grounded in lived experience. Facilitators are supported through training, resources and ongoing guidance to ensure they feel confident delivering accurate, up‑to‑date information and facilitating respectful, meaningful conversations.

Main Activities

  • Support and co‑facilitate workshops and forums in collaboration with other volunteer facilitators and ACON staff.

  • Create and maintain a safe, welcoming and inclusive learning environment that encourages participation, respect and peer connection.

  • Facilitate peer‑led discussions that support learning, reflection and shared experience.

  • Maintain a current understanding of HIV, STIs and sexual health through ACON‑provided training and updates.

  • Support workshop logistics, including ensuring facilitation spaces are left clean, safe and respectful.

  • Liaise with ACON staff (including the relevant CHPO and front‑of‑house staff) in a timely and professional manner.

  • Assist with the collection of evaluation data at the beginning and end of workshops.

  • Provide constructive feedback to ACON staff on workshop content, delivery, safety and participant experience.

  • Maintain professional boundaries and uphold confidentiality at all times.

  • Comply with ACON’s policies, including the Code of Conduct and Privacy Policy.

Essential requirements

  1. Understanding of and commitment to ACON’s communities, particularly the sexual and other health issues and information needs of LGBTQ+ people and people living with HIV.

  2. Polite, insightful, empathetic, and non-judgemental approach to volunteering

  3. Good communication skills, including conflict resolution, listening skills and open-mindedness

  4. The ability to work cooperatively and as part of a team.

  5. Demonstrated ability to be flexible, responsive, and organised.

  6. Commitment to a minimum of 16 hours per 12 months (1 workshop per year).

Desirable

  1. Experience performing peer-based health promotion, facilitation, training, or public speaking.

  2. Recommended vaccinations against illness that may adversely impact ACON’s communities.

  3. Willingness to travel to workshop locations.
